Samoohika Sannadha Sena
Kerala government volunteer force for Covid-19 relief and disaster management.
Samoohika Sannadha Sena is a volunteer army formed by the Kerala government to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. As of the latest count, over 332,000 people have signed up, including men, women, and transgender members, with the majority aged between 20 and 40. Volunteers come from diverse backgrounds such as medical, IT, graduates awaiting employment, skilled labourers, Kudumbashree workers, NSS and NCC cadets, and ex-NCC cadets. Launched officially by the chief minister in January, enrolment surged after a public appeal during lockdown. Volunteers are engaged in community kitchens, delivery of essential supplies, manning district Covid-19 control rooms, distributing medicines, seeds, and fertilizers. A central control room at ANERT headquarters, staffed by 40 volunteers, handles calls via a toll-free helpline and assigns tasks locally. Once pandemic activities conclude, the state plans to train volunteers in disaster management and mitigation. Anyone aged 16 to 65 can register through the official website.
