Orpheus Choir

Orpheus Choir is Bangkok's resident chorus for Opera Siam, performing year-round concerts.

The Orpheus Choir serves as the resident chorus for Opera Siam in Bangkok and functions as a highly active choral group that performs concerts throughout the year whenever it is not involved in opera productions. Composed of members from over a dozen countries living and working in Bangkok, the choir boasts nearly 200 registered members, though each production typically calls upon between 25 and 100 singers. Many choristers have progressed to solo roles within Opera Siam. The group rehearses every Thursday year-round under the artistic direction of Bangkok Opera's Somtow Sucharitkul, alongside various guest choir masters. Originally formed as an ad hoc ensemble to perform the world premiere of Somtow Sucharitkul's Requiem: In Memoriam 9/11, the choir has since performed major works including the Brahms and Mozart Requiems, Haydn's Mass in Time of War, Handel's Dixit Dominus, and operas such as Dido and Aeneas, The Magic Flute, Turandot, and Mae Naak. In addition to opera, the choir performs two major choral works annually, featuring pieces like Mahler's Eighth Symphony, Tippett's A Child of Our Time, and Somtow's Requiem for the Mother of Songs. In 2015, the Orpheus Choir established a spinoff, the Siam Orpheus Chamber Choir, to focus on more intimate repertoire. Auditions are held on a regular basis for new members.
