GiCD (Girls in Chengdu) is a community in Chengdu focused on gender equality and women's empowerment.
In Chengdu, a city known for its relaxed social attitudes, a feminist revival is unfolding. GiCD (short for 'Girls in Chengdu') is a social network for hundreds of women in the city, launched in April 2024 by He Jiayu and Bai Yuanjie. The group started as casual meet-ups but has evolved into a packed weekly schedule of activities such as rock climbing, film screenings, and craft workshops. The founders aim to create a space free of sexual harassment and the prospect of being approached for a date. They focus on the practical benefits of women-only spaces rather than political ideas, emphasizing solidarity, support, and empowerment. In a society where 'gender antagonism' is a concern, GiCD represents a strategic adaptation to the political environment, allowing women to live their lives with relative openness within the limits of a government that values 'positive energy' and censors social criticism. The community reflects a broader trend of women in Chengdu charting their own paths, defying societal pressure to live according to a fixed, Communist Party-approved blueprint.
