The University of Chicago Folklore Society organizes the UChicago Folk Festival, a two-day event celebrating over six decades of musical and cultural expression in Hyde Park. Founded in 1961 as a student-run initiative dedicated to authentic, non-commercial folk music, the festival has evolved to encompass a wide variety of genres including blues, jazz, Cajun traditions, and international folk styles. The event features free daytime workshops at Ida Noyes Hall where participants can learn instruments like the fiddle, harmonica, and hurdy-gurdy, or explore traditional crafts such as quilting, crocheting, and change ringing. Evening performances take place at Mandel Hall, showcasing a diverse array of performers ranging from historical icons to contemporary artists. The festival emphasizes a personal relationship with music and culture, distinguishing itself from commercialized events by focusing on generational traditions that emerge from communities. Attendance has grown significantly, with the last in-person event drawing up to 800 people. The society welcomes students, faculty, alumni, and Hyde Park community members to participate in weekly meetings to discuss musical definitions and plan future lineups, fostering a vibrant mosaic of cultural exchange on campus.
