The club was established in 1979 as part of the UAE Chess Federation and became independent in 1981. Its current headquarters, built in 1999, was the world's largest dedicated chess club. It hosted the 27th Chess Olympiad in 1986 and the 2014 World Rapid and Blitz Championships.
