Die Kirche wurde vermutlich um 990 gegründet, nach Bränden 1435 und 1444 als dreischiffige Hallenkirche neu errichtet. 1521 wurde sie durch die Reformation evangelisch und Martin Rinckart war hier als Archidiakon tätig, der 1630 den Choral 'Nun danket alle Gott' schrieb.
