Houston Children's Chorus performs for civic events and major venues in Houston.
Founded in 1989 by Director Stephen Roddy, the Houston Children's Chorus enrolls more than 200 children from grades two through eight. The group represents the diverse cultures of Houston and performs at numerous civic events throughout the year. Beyond its main activities, the Chorus operates a Music in The Schools program designed to provide music instruction to inner-city schools that cannot afford a music teacher. The ensemble has been featured with prominent organizations including the Houston Symphony, Houston Symphony POPS, Masterworks Chorus, Houston Choral Society, and Rice University Chorale. Its performances have included appearances alongside President George H. W. Bush, the recording of the Blue Bell Ice Cream commercial, concerts with Celine Dion, and the opening ceremonies of the 2004 Super Bowl with Josh Groban. The Chorus has performed for the U.S. President on 34 occasions and was featured in the national broadcast of the Celebration of the Life of Barbara Bush. Notable achievements include the premiere of the commissioned work Heartsongs at Carnegie Hall and the world premiere of the opera Can We Know the Sound of Forgiveness by composer Gabriela Ortiz. Looking ahead, the Chorus is scheduled to premiere a new commissioned work titled Lessons Learned From Kids at Carnegie Hall in June 2025.
