Madras Youth Choir in Madurai promotes patriotism, unity, and folk songs through music.
Founded by the late M B Srinivasan and launched on August 19, 1970, the Madras Youth Choir (MYC) has spent decades spreading the spirit of patriotism, national integration, secularism, world peace, environmental awareness, and folk songs through choral music. Originally formed for a youth programme, the group became a permanent choral ensemble following a rousing public response. Recognized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, MYC performs at cultural festivals and programs, and even travelled to the USA in July 2017 for an international choir festival marking John F Kennedy's birth centenary. Comprising members of all age groups and a junior choir, the group operates on the joy of singing together rather than professional status. Though physical performances have been paused due to the pandemic, MYC has adapted by conducting regular online training sessions—with the junior choir practicing on Saturdays and the main choir meeting online on Sundays—while uploading compositions, classes, and performances to their website and social media handles.
