English Choir, Cathedral Church of the Redemption – Delhi's oldest church choir since 1938, in New Delhi.
The English Choir is the formal choir of the Cathedral Church of the Redemption in New Delhi, recognized as Delhi's oldest church choir with formal beginnings in 1938. Originating in the early 1930s with a handful of British officers, it has grown to a 37-member ensemble drawn from diverse backgrounds, including students, professionals, and retirees. The choir maintains a tradition of four-part harmony — soprano, alto, tenor, and bass — accompanied by the cathedral's historic pipe organ, assembled in 1936 and considered the oldest in Southeast Asia with 5,000 pipes. Rehearsals intensify before Christmas with thrice-weekly evening sessions, focusing on a repertoire of traditional carols such as 'Silent Night' and 'O Little Town of Bethlehem.' Membership is open to any church member with basic musical knowledge, and the choir serves multiple services with a mix of contemporary and classical hymns. Longtime members like Osmand Chakravarthy, who joined in 1964, and Colonel S.C. Adisesihiah, who joined in 2005, attest to the choir's lasting personal impact. Under director Verghese John, the group continues its traditional character while incorporating younger voices that bring livelier arrangements. The cathedral also hosts separate Tamil and Hindi choirs.
