Schon in der fränkischen Zeit um ca. 700 n. Chr. befand sich hier ein erster Kirchenbau aus Holz. Um 1012 begann man dann mit dem Bau einer steinernen Kirche, die von der hl. Irmgard von Aspel gestiftet und 1040 fertig gestellt wurde.
