Die Kirche wurde in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts errichtet, als Sassnitz zum bedeutendsten Seebad Rügens aufblühte. Der Turm ist 33 Meter hoch und das Altarfenster wurde von Kaiserin Auguste-Victoria gestiftet.
