Assumption Cathedral
Assumption Cathedral in Vellore serves as the mother church of the Diocese of Vellore.
Assumption Cathedral in Vellore stands as the mother church of the Diocese of Vellore, a site of deep religious significance since its origins in 1604. Originally built in 1854 as Assumption church, it became the cathedral of the newly formed Diocese of Vellore in 1952. The structure underwent significant development, including repairs and the addition of wings, before being demolished in 1999 to make way for a modern replacement. The new cathedral, consecrated in September 2002, is one of the largest in Asia and features a 165-foot belfry, a Blessed Sacrament chapel, prayer halls, and glass paintings depicting salvific history. With capacity for 3,000 to 5,000 worshippers, the spacious interior allows large congregations to gather for the Eucharist and sacraments. The Tabernacle is located under a beautiful crucifix near the main altar. Beyond its role as a center for Catholic worship, the cathedral welcomes visitors from other religions to pray and experience its atmosphere of God's love and mercy.
