History
Formed in 1922 by Shetland Islanders who settled in New Zealand, the society has a long history of celebrating Shetland culture, music, and heritage. It was originally focused on maritime activities and the fishing community in Island Bay, but now serves a wider audience of New Zealanders interested in Shetland. The society organizes annual functions, events, and Hamefarins to maintain connections with Shetland and document the contributions of Shetlanders in New Zealand.
