Church of North India

A diocese of the Church of North India is established in Delhi.

Christianity exists as a minority religion within Delhi, the National Capital Territory of India. A diocese of the Church of North India is established in the city, alongside other major denominations and structures such as the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Delhi, the Central Baptist Church, St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral in Hauz Khas, and the Northern Region head office of the Indian Pentecostal Church of God. The history of Christianity in the region dates back to the era of the Mughal emperor Akbar, who invited a Jesuit priest from Goa in 1579 to learn about the faith. Subsequent historical periods included the establishment of a city church dedicated to the Virgin Mary by Father Desideri in 1723, which faced destruction during Nadir Shah's invasion in 1739. Christianity was later introduced for a second time by the British, who constructed numerous churches for worship and sent missionaries to propagate the Gospel. Following events during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the faith experienced another decline in the area. Today, Delhi is home to a variety of recognized churches, including the Cathedral Church of the Redemption, Sacred Heart Cathedral, St. James' Church, St. Stephen's Church, and several other active congregations.
