SEWA Delhi

SEWA Delhi organizes and empowers women in the informal economy across Delhi.

SEWA Delhi has been organizing women in the informal economy since 1999 to support their livelihoods, protect their rights, build self-reliance, and lift them out of poverty in Delhi. Operating through SEWA Shakti Kendras across various areas of the city, the organization supports major trade groups including waste recyclers, home-based workers, domestic workers, street vendors, and construction workers. SEWA Delhi became a registered independent trust in 2007 and has built a large membership base of informal economy women workers, alongside establishing a women-run financial institution known as the Mahila SEWA Urban Thrift and Credit Cooperative. Its comprehensive approach involves strengthening trade groups, enabling women microentrepreneurs, addressing workplace sexual harassment awareness, improving transparency for home-based workers, and facilitating access to social security entitlements. The organization engages in advocacy initiatives such as contributing to the Street Vendors Bill, participating in urban planning campaigns like 'Main bhi Dilli', and executing community-based relief and infrastructure improvement projects. Additionally, SEWA Delhi provides capacity-building and skill development training in areas such as retail, garment making, and e-rickshaw driving to help women secure sustainable livelihoods.

Since 1999, SEWA has been organizing women in Delhi to bring them out of the shadows, support their livelihoods, and lift them out of poverty.
