Sivananda Ashram

The Sivananda Ashram, affiliated with the Divine Life Society of India, is located in Parkview, Johannesburg, at 4 Tyson Road. Founded in 1956 by followers inspired by Swami Sivananda, the ashram sits on a peaceful hilltop garden property and offers Hatha, meditation, and philosophy classes as well as Satsang gatherings. Rooted in the Hindu tradition, it teaches authentic yoga without modern adaptations, focusing on Hatha practice to cultivate breath control and prepare for meditation. Philosophy sessions explore ancient mystical teachings on life, karma, and consciousness, while Satsang meetings feature chanting, readings, and discussions in a spirit of fellowship. Open to the public, Satsang is free of charge and includes devotional elements like prayers and aarti. The ashram also provides trauma counselling through Swami Karunananda for those in need.
