EKO Chess in Lagos, Nigeria, focuses on bridging education inequity through chess in public schools.

EKO Chess, based in Lagos, Nigeria, was founded by three Teach for Nigeria fellows who are passionate about addressing education inequity. Their mission is to create a chess community that raises exceptional chess players in public schools across Lagos. Inspired by Tunde Onakoya and Chess in Slums, EKO Chess aims to ensure that every public school in Lagos has a progressive chess club. The organization has reached 10 schools in Lagos State, establishing a chess club in each. Currently, they plan to host the first interschool competition in public schools by mid-term. A chess master in one of the schools noted that teaching chess has positively influenced students' academic performance, motivating him to raise grandmasters in unexpected places. EKO Chess is committed to using chess as a tool for educational advancement and community engagement.
