Armenian Autism Outreach Project (AAOP)
Armenian Autism Outreach Project raises autism awareness in LA's Armenian community.
The Armenian Autism Outreach Project (AAOP) is an all-volunteer nonprofit that has worked for over a decade to raise autism awareness within Los Angeles' Armenian community. Founded by Dr. Sonia Konialian-Aller and others, the organization addresses deep-rooted cultural stigma that often frames autism as a "disease" carrying shame and guilt. In Armenian households where extended families live closely, elders may dismiss developmental differences as typical behavior or urge parents to hide a diagnosis, adding burden to families already navigating complex emotions. AAOP helps counter this isolation by providing education and fostering understanding, empowering parents to seek assessments and services rather than conceal their child's needs. The project operates within a broader network of regional center support groups that serve diverse linguistic communities across the county, recognizing that cultural barriers — not just language — can prevent families from accessing available resources. By connecting Armenian families with information and peer support, AAOP helps bridge the gap between traditional attitudes and the services that can improve outcomes for children on the autism spectrum.
