Palabras Literary Salon
BIPOC-centered literary salon in Los Angeles celebrating diverse voices and intercultural exchange.
Palabras Literary Salon is a BIPOC-centered literary community in Los Angeles that fosters intercultural exchange through intimate, grassroots gatherings. Founded by Jen Cheng, the salon draws inspiration from civil rights consciousness-raising circles and the Harlem Renaissance salons of Maya Angelou, creating a space where writers and readers of all backgrounds can gather in a non-hierarchical circle. Each event centers on a theme—such as lust, nostalgia, or borders—and features a mix of featured writers alongside a guest readers circle of emerging and established BIPOC poets, writers, and playwrights. The salons emphasize talk-story and witnessing as ways to deepen understanding of shared humanity, all while breaking bread together with light refreshments. Open to all, the events prioritize accessibility through volunteer-run efforts and honor-system donations, ensuring that everyone can participate. Held in Chinatown’s Studious Coworking space, the salons blend literary discussion with community building, making space for both celebration and reflection.
