St. Stephen's Choir in Mumbai, a historic Christian worship group with a century of tradition.
The St. Stephen's Choir in Mumbai is a Christian worship ensemble that has served the congregation since the 1970s, evolving from a small informal group into a recognized musical institution. While the choir officially began in the 1970s, it is deeply rooted in the church's long-standing tradition of sung liturgy. The group practices on Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. to prepare hymns and music for Sunday services, often organizing additional rehearsals for special occasions like Easter, Harvest, and Christmas. Over the decades, the choir has adapted its repertoire, moving from traditional European compositions to contemporary music, a shift driven by members such as Joseph Silvanus and later professional musicians like Andrew Simoes. In addition to their regular services, the choir has performed concerts for various causes and parishes, including the Afghan Church in Colaba and the Catholic community. Currently, the choir also offers basic music and voice training to a group of mainly young people after Sunday services, aiming to nurture the next generation of musicians and keep the strong musical tradition of St. Stephen's Church alive.
