DC Central Kitchen Volunteer Zone
DC Central Kitchen Volunteer Zone in Washington, D.C. prepares meals for the community.
DC Central Kitchen Volunteer Zone in Washington, D.C. invites volunteers to work alongside dedicated staff and culinary job training students to cut, chop, peel, and prep fresh produce for balanced community meals. Volunteers can join daily morning shifts starting at 9am or weekday evening shifts from 6 to 8pm, with registration available up to three months in advance. No cooking or food service experience is required, though volunteers must be at least 12 years old and sign a General Liability and Waiver form; those under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver. The role involves meal prep tasks such as vegetable cutting, salad preparation, and packaging, requiring the ability to stand for three hours, though heavy lifting is not required. Safety is paramount, so appropriate industrial kitchen attire including closed-toed shoes, long pants, and sleeves is mandatory. While lunch is not provided, the on-site cafe offers items for purchase, and catering services are available for groups. For gleaning shifts at local farms, volunteers bring their own water and snacks, as no food is provided and personal items cannot be stored. All volunteers must adhere to intake and reporting requirements and cancel shifts within 48 hours prior to the scheduled time or call the office for last-minute changes to ensure the community is served effectively.
