The Jesuit Cinema Club in Cairo has been providing film screenings and discussions for seven years, offering a unique space for people to engage with cinema beyond the traditional screen. Founded in 2009, the club was inspired by the idea of a cinematheque – an archive for films – and aims to diversify the film offerings by showcasing a wide variety of movies from different cultures, including African, Latin American, and Iranian films, as well as documentaries and short films. The club also screens films by major international directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, and Abbas Kiarostami, and includes films that have won international prizes such as the Oscar or the Palme d'Or. Each screening is followed by a discussion where the film is analyzed, criticized, and deconstructed, allowing for a deeper understanding and engagement with the content. The club also serves as a platform for dialogue and art criticism, particularly among young members. In addition to the Jesuit Cinema Club, other local groups, such as Islam Othman's mobile cinema club in Alexandria, have also emerged, bringing the concept to different parts of the city and engaging communities in new ways. The concept has also been adopted by restaurants, such as the 'Eish wa Malh' in downtown Cairo, which offers film dinners where guests can enjoy a meal while watching a classic Arab or international film, followed by discussions with organizers. These events create an atmosphere of security, human warmth, and contentment, while also fostering dialogue and relationships among guests.
