Hyde Park Union Church, located at 5600 S. Woodlawn Ave in Chicago, was unanimously designated a city landmark by the City Council for its architectural splendor and historical significance. Designed by prominent architect James Gamble Rogers in 1906, the original building features an education wing added in 1926. The structure reflects the growth of the Hyde Park neighborhood and the influence of the University of Chicago. Originally known as Hyde Park Baptist Church until 1963, the congregation is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches-USA and the United Church of Christ. While the church today has 75 members, it serves as a vital community center hosting programs such as the Hyde Park-Kenwood food pantry, Chicago Chorale, and Le Cantanti de Chicago. The venue also accommodates other faith-based groups, including the Korean United Methodist Church and UChicago's Muslim Student Association. It is a regular host for the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, featuring performances by artists like Nikki Giovanni and Javon Jackson. In March, the church received a $3,000 grant from Landmarks Illinois to restore its fifth-floor tower room, which was in advanced deterioration. The building stands as a testament to a harmonious blend of faith, community, and architectural elegance within Chicago's history.
