The Grandparents and Books program is a volunteer initiative offered by the Los Angeles Public Library's Washington Irving Branch, designed specifically for older adults who wish to engage with the next generation. This program invites volunteers to participate in reading activities with children, either by reading books aloud or listening to children read to them. To join, volunteers receive training to develop their reading aloud skills and other book sharing techniques. Participants are expected to commit between two and ten hours per week to support the program. The library recruits, trains, and places volunteers to support both these special programs and regular library activities. There are no fees to use the library or to apply for a library card, and fines are only assessed for overdue or lost materials.
