New York Open Water

New York Open Water organizes open water swims around Manhattan and the Hudson.

New York Open Water continues to organize open water swims around Manhattan, the Hudson River, Governors Island, and other locations under its own banner, following the departure of the previous founding group. While the original organizers, Drury Gallagher and MISA, stepped down after a decade of service in 1993, a dedicated band of volunteers filled the vacuum and maintained the annual Manhattan Swim calendar. The group has historically offered events such as the Little Red Lighthouse Swim down the Hudson, the Ederle Swim to Sandy Hook, and swims across the East River under the Brooklyn Bridge. For over twenty years, the group has served the New York community, evolving from an activity once considered laughable to a respected tradition. Although the founders are closing the book after twenty-plus years due to personal health challenges and family priorities, the community's hunger for open water swims will be satisfied by numerous other organizations including CIBBOWS, NYC Triathlon, New Amsterdam City Swim, River Pool at Beacon, Urban Swim, and Lady Liberty Sharkfest Swim. The group expresses deep gratitude to the fantastic volunteers who have assisted over the years, noting that the events and participant memories would not have happened without their assistance and amazing support. It was a great run, and the group bids farewell with peace.
