The High School Choir in Kansas is a community music group affiliated with the Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) that prepares students for state-level performance opportunities. During the 2026-27 academic year, the program features clinician Dustin Cates for the mixed choir, while the treble choir clinician is yet to be determined. The season begins with a kick-off meeting at Andover-Central High School in August, followed by auditions held at Goddard High School in November. Students must register for auditions through the KMEA Members portal, adhering to specific deadlines and associated fees that increase for late registrations. Selected students who participate in the program are required to attend clinics and concerts at Maize South High School in December, where they pay a participation fee. Eligibility for selection to the KMEA All-State High School Choirs is restricted to ninth graders, provided their sponsoring teachers are members of NAfME-KMEA. The program emphasizes strict adherence to rehearsal schedules and audition procedures, including the use of original sheet music and specific conductive cues. Additionally, a new opt-out process allows teachers to prevent specific students from being named to state choirs, though failure to do so may result in the student being selected and charged the participation fee. Directors play a critical role in the audition process, with mandatory availability from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on the day of auditions to judge, direct, or tabulate results.
