Johnson County Youth Court
Johnson County Youth Court provides youth volunteer opportunities in Kansas.
Johnson County Youth Court, sometimes referred to as Olathe Youth Court, functions as an alternative to the formal juvenile justice system by allowing juvenile offenders to be sentenced by a jury of their peers. The organization aims to provide early intervention for youth who commit first-time minor offenses. During a sentencing hearing, the offender appears before the court much like they would in a formal setting. All key court roles, including judges, prosecuting and defense attorneys, bailiffs, and jury members, are filled by youth volunteers ranging from ages 10 to 18, with 18-year-olds required to be current seniors. Youth volunteers must complete training prior to participating in the court. One-time volunteer opportunities are available alongside training sessions, and participants do not need to be residents of Johnson County to join.
