Achilles International Los Angeles

Achilles International Los Angeles supports people with disabilities through guided athletic programs.

Achilles International Los Angeles was established in 1983 to transform the lives of people with disabilities through athletic programs and social connection. Today, the Los Angeles chapter creates opportunities for individuals with physical and mental disabilities to participate in running, walking, and other athletic events with the assistance of nondisabled volunteers known as guides. The organization serves a diverse range of athletes, including those with autism, visual impairments, and amputations, as well as veterans who have lost limbs. Volunteer guides undergo training and background checks before being paired with athletes to ensure safety and support. Walks typically begin with warm-up stretches and cover three-mile trails starting at Dorothy Green Park in Santa Monica, though routes may vary. The group aims to help athletes who may not be able to drive access these events by meeting at convenient locations. Approximately 50 people, comprising both athletes and guides, attend the monthly walks. Beyond the physical activity, the program emphasizes social connection, making it easier for participants to form friendships with like-minded individuals while exercising.
