AARP Experience Corps tutors 50+ help Baltimore K-3 students learn to read via Elev8 Baltimore.

The AARP Experience Corps Tutor program, operated by Elev8 Baltimore in partnership with the AARP Foundation and AmeriCorps, engages volunteers aged 50 and older to help kindergarten through third-grade children learn to read. This evidence-based intervention places tutors directly with students in small groups and one-on-one sessions focused on phonics and fluency. The program runs during the academic year from September through May, with schedules varying by location. All tutors receive professional development, training, and ongoing coaching from dedicated youth development professionals working in collaboration with partner schools. By providing consistent, intergenerational support, the program aims to build reading skills and foster relationships that can change a child’s future.
