Greenhouse Garden is a fenceless community garden in West Town, Chicago, open to all.

Established in 1992 and officially protected by NeighborSpace in 1998, the Greenhouse Garden in West Town, Chicago, began as a city-owned lot used for car repairs before transforming into a thriving neighborhood refuge. The garden is distinguished by its lack of fences or barriers, symbolizing its open invitation to anyone who wishes to enjoy the space. Originally, an unknown neighbor planted tomatoes in the weeds, sparking a collective effort to clean and cultivate the lot into a diverse community garden. Today, the site is home to vegetables, fruit trees, bushes, flowers, herbs, and towering prairie grasses, serving as a place for residents to work, socialize, and connect. Community workdays are held every Sunday from May through October, offering opportunities to pick cherries, birdwatch for yellow finches, or simply enjoy fresh herbs and lunch under grape vines. The garden fosters both individual plots and communal areas, encouraging families and individuals to participate in maintaining the public spaces while building a core group of dedicated gardeners. It remains a testament to the resilience and creativity of West Town residents who turned a neglected lot into a shared sanctuary.
