Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse

Chicago's only park teaching greenhouse offering gardening programs and community plots.

Located within the grounds of Kilbourn Park at 3501 N. Kilbourn Avenue, the Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse is the Chicago Park District's only park featuring a teaching greenhouse. This educational facility connects people of all ages to nature through sustainable gardening practices and hands-on environmental programs. The site hosts several youth initiatives, including the 3-season Harvest Garden for older children and the Garden Buddies program for toddlers, alongside various family workshops and seasonal activities. A notable feature is the park's first public fruit tree orchard, planted in fall 2008 with donated mature trees including apples, pears, plums, cherries, and paw paws, as well as various berry bushes and grape vines. Community gardeners can utilize 25 plots located behind the children's garden, which follow strict organic growing practices and include annual social gatherings. The greenhouse also hosts an annual plant sale in May and a Harvest Festival featuring cooking demonstrations, seed saving, and composting techniques. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in educational programs, garden maintenance, or special events, with orientation sessions held seasonally and applications submitted through the Chicago Park District's volunteer form. Hours of operation vary by season, with the greenhouse generally open daily from 9am to 3pm.
