Downtown Boxing Gym Detroit
Downtown Boxing Gym Detroit volunteers tutor and support youth in athletics and events.
Downtown Boxing Gym Detroit is a community partner dedicated to nurturing young people by creating a space where their potential is uplifted and futures are shaped. The organization empowers students aged 8 to 18, and supports alumni up to age 25, through education, athletics, mentorship, and wrap-around intervention services. Rooted in the principle of 'Books Before Boxing,' the gym treats academics as a foundational element, using boxing and athletic training as tools to engage, discipline, and inspire students to become positive, productive members of society. The gym operates on the belief that trusted relationships, shared power, and lasting change are essential for doing whatever it takes for as long as it takes. Volunteers can participate in tutoring sessions or provide athletic support during weekday shifts from Monday through Thursday, with specific time slots available in the late afternoon. Additionally, opportunities exist to assist with community events. To join, volunteers must complete a group orientation, undergo a background check, and sign a waiver. While there is a minimum requirement of one hour per week for the gym's specific schedule, the gym also encourages participation in broader community initiatives hosted by partners like SDM2, the Center for Success, and Brilliant Detroit, which offer various tutoring and literacy programs for different age groups.
