SDM2
SDM2 Detroit volunteers for youth programs, tutoring, and community events.
SDM2 is a community organization in Detroit dedicated to fostering positive change through education empowerment, youth engagement, and sustainable development. We connect volunteers with a variety of weekly programs and occasional community events designed to support students and families. Our partners include the Center for Success, which pairs volunteers with individual students for literacy tutoring and life skills mentorship; Brilliant Detroit, which offers tutoring and health-focused community events for kindergarten through eighth grade; and SDM2 Project Education, which provides middle and high school tutoring alongside college preparation. Other opportunities exist with the Redford Brightmoor Initiative, where volunteers sort donations and restock a free store, and the Downtown Boxing Gym, which combines athletic support with academic tutoring for youth up to age 25. While many programs require in-person commitment and involve driving time, some offer flexible online tutoring options. Volunteers should be aware of specific shift lengths, such as two-hour blocks for tutoring or longer sessions for store operations, and note that some organizations require background checks, waivers, or short application processes before beginning. Contact Gwen Mitchell at [email protected] for questions or to express interest in upcoming events like the annual Community Harvest Fest.
