The Film Rats Club

The Film Rats Club is a Lagos-based community of filmmakers and enthusiasts founded in 2017 by actor and director Martin Nwachukwu. Rooted in a shared passion for cinema, the group works to document, educate, and champion the voices of African independent filmmakers through community, culture, and creative expression. Their activities include screenings, workshops, panel discussions, filmmaker interviews, film criticism, and reviews, all aimed at creating space where filmmakers can grow, collaborate, and be seen on their own terms. The club’s flagship event, The Annual Film Mischief (TAFM), is a festival dedicated entirely to low-budget independent films, now expanded to include works from across Africa. For young Nigerian filmmakers seeking alternatives to the mainstream Nollywood industry, The Film Rats Club offers a vibrant, supportive community where cinema is treated as a medium for inquiry and connection rather than mere entertainment.
