Kumar's book crawls are monthly literary events in Los Angeles where readers visit independent bookstores together.

Kumar's book crawls are monthly literary events in Los Angeles designed to transform reading from a solitary hobby into a social experience. Founded by Allison Ambili Kumar in 2024 after noticing a lack of organic interaction spaces for book lovers, these events involve a traveling party of readers visiting at least three independent bookstores in one area, such as Culver City, Long Beach, Hollywood, and Pasadena. The crawls aim to increase visibility for local shops while allowing participants to connect in a casual, welcoming environment through shared book selections, often concluding with 'book hauls' where attendees share what they picked up. While the events typically draw around 20 attendees, they foster a larger community that extends beyond the gatherings, with participants frequently meeting up for other social activities. These crawls represent a shift toward diverse, community-focused book events in the city, complementing other local initiatives like the Preoccupied's Walking Book Club and silent reading parties that are turning literature into happening social occasions.
