Sanjiv Valsan's Forest Fire Response Group in Mumbai focuses on forest fire response, tree planting, and environmental sustainability.

Sanjiv Valsan's Forest Fire Response Group is dedicated to protecting Mumbai's forests and promoting environmental sustainability through direct action and community engagement. Led by photographer and environmentalist Sanjiv Valsan, the group coordinates a volunteer network to respond to frequent forest fires in Aarey, a 1300-hectare forest adjoining the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. During summer, when fires occur every other day and water is scarce, Valsan and his volunteers act as first responders, smothering flames with available resources to prevent further damage. Beyond emergency response, the group engages in active reforestation, having begun tree plantation work in 2019 as a form of citizen protest against the cutting of trees for infrastructure projects like the Metro car shed. The group emphasizes that planting is only part of the solution; they also focus on the critical hard work of caring for these trees during dry months to ensure their survival. Additionally, Valsan has partnered with tribal farmer Vinita Thakarey to host workshops that raise awareness among students and city-dwellers about the delicate balance of Mumbai's unique forest ecosystems. The group's work aims to restore the forest while educating the public on the importance of preserving these vital green spaces.
