Among Friends is a volunteer group in Norman, Oklahoma, dedicated to supporting local nonprofits through service and community engagement. The United Way of Norman, which Among Friends supports, views volunteerism as a cornerstone for community change, encouraging businesses to allow employees time off to participate in events like the annual Day of Caring. Impact Council members play a vital role by identifying community needs and recommending funding to the Board of Directors. The group facilitates opportunities across various partner agencies, including ABLE, which teaches job and social skills to adults with developmental disabilities; Aging Services, which offers meal delivery and yard work; Among Friends itself, which provides socialization and life skills programs for adults with additional needs; Bethesda, which supports childhood abuse victims; Big Brothers Big Sisters, which mentors at-risk children; Bridges, which assists teenagers living independently; Center for Children and Families, Inc, which mentors youth and supports families; Crossroads Youth & Family Services, which works with shelter residents and Head Start teachers; and Food and Shelter, which serves unhoused neighbors. Volunteers can assist with maintenance, landscaping, cooking, mentoring, administrative tasks, and fundraising. Restrictions vary by agency, including age requirements, background checks, and prohibitions on court-ordered community service hours. Contact information and specific task details are available for each organization to arrange participation.
